Tom’s story

Tom Denhart 1941-2009

Tom Denhart was a father, husband, grandfather, friend, artist, advocate and patient.

On April 12 2009, he lost his 14 year battle with prostate cancer.

The following is my family’s story of discovery and loss. As I’ve learned, this experience is not uncommon when it comes to men and prostate cancer. It doesn’t have to be this way.

My message is this:

  • Change your life
  • Choose a doctor who is a partner and an artist
  • Get rid of the unhealthy – both material and physical
  • Enrich your spiritual nature
  • Accept death, which comes to us all
  • Love yourself
  • Be well

-Tom Denhart, 1996 journal quote

As children we don’t fully understand the role of our parents. Sometimes it takes years to figure it out and sometimes we never do. Growing up I didn’t really know my dad, Tom. My parents were divorced in 1975 when I was 8 years old. As is common he lived with his new wife and stepson in the same geographical area and I was able to see him on the odd weekends and during school breaks. The relationship was OK but it is not what I would call a close one.
